Google just released the Pixel 9 series in August, it’s not done expanding the lineup. A recent report from Android Headlines and OnLeaks gives us an early look at the upcoming Pixel 9a, expected to launch in spring 2025, possibly around Google I/O.
Pixel 9a: A New Design Direction
Unlike previous A-series Pixel devices that closely followed the design of their mainline counterparts, the Pixel 9a breaks from the Pixel 9‘s design. The Pixel 9 introduced a new pill-shaped camera island that extends into the phone’s frame. However, the Pixel 9a brings another redesign. Instead of a raised camera island, the Pixel 9a features a dual-camera system that sits more flush with the phone’s back. While a small ring may protrude slightly around the camera module, it won’t be as noticeable as the signature Pixel camera bar.
Dual Cameras and Larger Bezels
In addition to the redesigned camera bar, the Pixel 9a is expected to feature a dual-camera setup—likely with a primary camera and an ultrawide lens. However, it seems there won’t be a telephoto lens on this device. The display has larger bezels, which is typical for a phone in the A-series price range (likely under $500).
While the iconic Pixel camera bar design has its fans, the shift to a more streamlined camera module on the Pixel 9a could bring a touch of nostalgia for those who miss the days when smartphones didn’t wobble when placed flat on a surface.
Android 15 and Long-Term Support
Unlike the other Pixel 9 devices, the Pixel 9a is expected to launch with Android 15, which is currently in beta but set to roll out in October. The Pixel 9a will benefit from Google’s seven-year update policy, ensuring long-term software support.
Last Samsung-Made Processor?
The Pixel 9a could also be the last Pixel device to use a Samsung-made processor. Rumors suggest the Pixel 10, set to debut in fall 2025, will feature a fully custom Google chip produced by TSMC.
Expected Specifications
The Pixel 9a is anticipated to have specs similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 8a:
- 6.1-inch display
- 8GB of RAM (possibly more)
- At least 128GB of storage
- Powered by the Tensor G4 chip
- Improved battery life over the Pixel 8a
Expected Release Date
While the official release date for the Pixel 9a hasn’t been confirmed, it is expected to follow a similar timeline to the Pixel 8a, which was announced on May 7, 2024, just ahead of Google I/O 2024. The Pixel 9a is likely to arrive around the same time in 2025.
